What is democracy? I think the definition of democracy is the freedom to choose, and also having personal rights. What then is stability? Stability is defined to be when a society is at equilibrium and will not collapse.
Why would democracy bring about stability? I think the reason why democracy would bring about stability is because the people would be able to choose their favorite ruler as well as the ruling party. This brings about stability because the people would have chosen a capable ruler as well as a capable ruling party. Furthermore, since the majority of the people have chosen this ruler or ruling party, there will be lesser conflicts and hence, bring forth more stability.
However, I do think that democracy can also bring about instability. Whenever there is a democratic election, there is bound to be people trying to best their opponents through underhand means. For example, they will try to bribe the public and promise to pay $100 for every vote. Now, is it still democratic? If applied on nowadays scenario, the answer is yes. Since it is considered democratic, it will bring forth instability.
In another scenario, after a candidate or a party loses an election, the supporters may cause havoc to the winning candidate or winning party. This is a form of instability. The supporters may also rebel if they feel that the newly elected candidate or party is not good enough. Once again, this causes instability.
In the current world, democracy can hardly be in its pure form without any taint of corruption; hence it would be very hard for democracy to bring stability. It would be easier and more correct to say that democracy brings instability in the current world.
