Anwar, the new Prime Minister (Mrs Nathan, this is to be graded)

On September 2nd 1998, Anwar was fired by Mahathir from the cabinet and. he was accused of sodomy. He was released later when it was found out that he was actually innocent. Surprisingly, he was sworn back into the parliament on August 29 2008, with the fact that he is once again accused of sodomy.

Now, after a decade, the government once again claimed that Anwar has committed sodomy. Unfortunately for them, the people now decide to put their faith in Anwar as shown in the by-election. This could be a shift in people’s mindset as they find Barisan Nasional to be unable to improve Malaysia. It could also mean that as more and more people get educated, they feel that the government is using sodomy to try and make Anwar seem less credible when he is the suitable man for prime minister.

Contrary to popular belief, Barisan Nasional is no longer winning the support of the Malays through its better treatment of the Malays. Instead, the Malays are split between Barisan Nasional’s Malay supremacy and the opposition who pushes for multiracialism. The interesting fact is that Malays whom support the opposition are actually the urban well-educated ones. This actually shows that the more educated Malays no longer feel that Malay supremacy will do well to the economy, and hence justifying their slant towards the opposition.

As for their Chinese and Indian counterparts, most of them had voted either for Democractic Action Party or the People’s Justice Party (Parti Keadilan Rakyat in malay). Both of the two parties belong to the opposition coalition, or known as Pakatan Rakyet. This would add on to Anwar’s chance of being the prime minister due to the support of the citizens.

Anwar had claimed that he can win the support of 30 Barisan Nasionals to his side as to achieve majority by mid September. I do not deny that he certainly has the capability to reach his goal now, but I feel that the problem would still lie with how he would to form the new government. If he is to take over the government and be voted Prime Minister, he still has the problem of appeasing certain members of the opposition coalition.

The main problem would be to come to a compromise that would make the opposition all agree to it. This would be hard due to the difference in views of the three different parties. Democratic Alliance Party would want democratic and a multiracial Malaysia, People’s Justice Party also want a multiracial Malaysia, but Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (Parti Islam Se-Malaysia in malay) wants a Islamic Malaysia.

Overall, I feel that Anwar’s so-called sodomy is a frame by the Barisan Nasional because they seemed to be in frenzy to as to try any method to stop Anwar from taking over the government and becoming the new Prime Minister. Nevertheless, he still has to prove that he is innocent before everyone will believe him.

Political system: Democracy brings stability (Mrs. Nathan, please mark this.)

What is democracy? I think the definition of democracy is the freedom to choose, and also having personal rights. What then is stability? Stability is defined to be when a society is at equilibrium and will not collapse.

Why would democracy bring about stability? I think the reason why democracy would bring about stability is because the people would be able to choose their favorite ruler as well as the ruling party. This brings about stability because the people would have chosen a capable ruler as well as a capable ruling party. Furthermore, since the majority of the people have chosen this ruler or ruling party, there will be lesser conflicts and hence, bring forth more stability.

However, I do think that democracy can also bring about instability. Whenever there is a democratic election, there is bound to be people trying to best their opponents through underhand means. For example, they will try to bribe the public and promise to pay $100 for every vote. Now, is it still democratic? If applied on nowadays scenario, the answer is yes. Since it is considered democratic, it will bring forth instability.

In another scenario, after a candidate or a party loses an election, the supporters may cause havoc to the winning candidate or winning party. This is a form of instability. The supporters may also rebel if they feel that the newly elected candidate or party is not good enough. Once again, this causes instability.

In the current world, democracy can hardly be in its pure form without any taint of corruption; hence it would be very hard for democracy to bring stability. It would be easier and more correct to say that democracy brings instability in the current world.

Teenage and social issue

I feel that the closest issue that reflects on both the teenage and social part of most people lives will be the winning of the bid to Youth Olympics 2010. The road for Singapore from starting the bid for the first Youth Olympics 2010 to winning the bid for it is actually quite rough.

There were 9 countries in total bidding to host the Youth Olympics. Although not all of them were strong opponents, Moscow and Athens were two of the much stronger ones. Athens had hosted a summer Olympic, a Olympic, and seven IOC sessions, proving to be the most experienced country. Moscow had been rated by the IOC as the top country, the only one to have surpassed Singapore. Furthermore, Singapore Sports Hub is expected to be completed in 2011, but Singapore decided to carry out with the bid.

However, I felt that Singapore's bid for 2010 Youth Olympics is rather good. There is a good plan with good choosing of venues to hold sport events. I personally do not think that with Singapore hosting 2010 Youth Olympics will affect most of us, but however, it will affect all these teenage sportspeople.

Overall, I feel that Singapore as the host for 2010 Youth Olympics will bring forward Singapore's economy as well as bring Singapore to the international stage. Also, this proves that being small has nothing to do with being incapable.

Race and ethnic issue

Unlike my friend gummy bear, I do not have time to post every single day, actually more of nothing to write about. I shall write once every two days then.

To the main topic, I think that it is strange that while in the middle east, Africa, and Sri Lanka, people are having conflict due to difference in ethnic groups, while at South East Asia, most of the conflicts here are due to race. With the Malaysia election coming up in around a couple of weeks(actually a fortnight), there is going to be a tension in both the ethnic battle and racial battle. Barisan Nasional or BN, the government of Malaysia, will be having an ethnic battle with Parti Islam Se-Malaysia or PAS and a racial battle with Democratic Alliance Party or DAP. This battle will be rather different as the lives of Malaysian had been dropping and this will cause the citizens to side towards the oppositions, though not as much so that the opposition will win the election. I personally felt that... well I guess its not good to voice out my views here but I shall watch if the opposition gets more seats this time compared to 2004.

On a side note, can someone tell me how come 23/25 in biology test still results in getting scolded for not studying... sigh.

UTOPIAN SOCIETY

This is what i think consists of a utopian society. Please do not read unless u have a warped sense of humour like my friend the gummy bear.

Firstly, it must have people with a lot of humour... like our SS teacher Mrs Ong. Secondly, it must NOT have people who release german poison gas like mad. Thirdly, we CANNOT have people go around groping(while the rest are joking, this is for real). Last but not least... NO HOMEWORK(this is impossible but then... its for jokes).

On a side note, i feel sad that even with bonus of 2 marks, i cant even get 25 for biology... sigh... didnt even top the class.

Reflection 1

This reflection is on 'On Becoming a Writer' passage from Russell Baker. I felt that this piece of work was rather good, it was interesting and also very straight to the point. The point of this piece of work was to tell us how Russell Baker became an author. He also used a lot of 'prim' in the 3rd paragraph, i thought that was like rather repetitive but after the teacher told me that it was meant to show out the 'properness' of the teacher, I realised how important it was to have repeated those words. I also enjoyed the way he stretched the climax. Way to go, Russell Baker.
